“This space seeks to combine two aspects: service and spirituality. A unique space, aimed at pilgrims who will come to Rome, but also at tourists from all over the world who will be able to take advantage of some services in this place in preparation for their visit to St. Peter’s Basilica.” Thus said Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, Archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica and President of the Fabbrica di San Pietro at the presentation of the new “Official Area” of the Vatican Basilica in Via della Conciliazione 3A.
“We wanted to stretch out our arms (with reference to the embrace of Bernini’s colonnade) in order to welcome men and women from every country in the world animated by faith or simply in search of faith, driven by the need to immerse themselves in the spirituality that has been felt for centuries in front of Peter’s tomb,” added the Cardinal.
Before greeting journalists and attendees, Gambetti blessed the place with Monsignor Orazio Pepe, Secretary of the Fabbrica di San Pietro. He then thanked those who, in recent months, have worked tirelessly to set up the spaces, with particular reference to Be Human, the third sector philanthropic association entrusted with the mission of managing this space together with Civita Mostre e Musei.
The mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, declared that the Official Area is a strategic point that will be further enhanced upon completion of the works in Piazza Pia that will unify Castel Sant’Angelo with Via Della Conciliazione and therefore with St. Peter’s Basilica: right in the middle of this union this space is born that will direct pilgrims to the Basilica.
“This is a philanthropic initiative – declared Donato Mosella, member of the Be Human association’s board of directors – Here you can also purchase artistic objects and cultural products whose proceeds will go to feed a fund that Be Human allocates to solidarity projects. Another commitment that sees us at work – added Mosella – is to organize and manage tourist activities of social, cultural and religious interest with the intent of allowing especially those who have less opportunity to live experiences of knowledge and immersion in the beauty that is art and culture”. “Through the official area, therefore, we want to put each individual person first and enhance resources to be allocated to those in need” concluded Mosella.
There are six work units employed in the Official Area that will be able to offer assistance in three languages: English, Spanish and Italian.
At the end, Father Enzo Fortunato, director of Communications of the Basilica of St. Peter announced that the Official Area will be the distribution point of the new magazine “Piazza San Pietro” to be released on November 25.
