CHAPTER HALL
Dear Colleague, the Fabbrica di San Pietro is pleased to invite you, on Tuesday 8 October at 9.30 a.m. in the Chapter House, to the exclusive visit to the scaffolding of the building site of the gilded bronze Baldachin and St. Peter’s Chair to admire from up close, at a height of over 20 metres, the work of the architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini and the restoration work that has been completed.
PRESS TOUR TO THE WORKSITE – The meeting will be attended by Engineer Alberto Capitanucci, Head of the Technical Area of the Fabbrica di San Pietro in the Vatican, and Father Enzo Fortunato, Director of Communication of St. Peter’s Basilica. During the visit, more information on the restoration work will be provided and the date of the inauguration will be announced.
THE RESTORATION – A restoration of great symbolic value because the Baldachin, which stands solemnly above the high altar, marks with its magnificence the site of the Tomb of the Apostle Peter to whom the Vatican Basilica is dedicated. A demanding and necessary restoration, but also of particular significance because it was undertaken in view of the upcoming Jubilee of 2025.
THE BALDACCHIN – The gilded bronze monument, created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini for Pope Urban VIII between 1624 and 1635, is almost 29 metres high and stands on four slender twisted columns inspired by the two marble columns placed around the tomb of Peter in the ancient basilica. The last work on St. Peter’s Baldachin dates back to the year 1758: a large team of workers and skilled labourers worked on it for about three months (up to sixty people a day).
